Rirkrit Tiravanija

Tea House

BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆 commissioned Rirkrit Tiravanija to create a meditation tea house, located on the roof of OōEli Space. Alluding to the Longjing tea garden on the rooftop of each OōEli building, this tea house invites visitors to talk, taste tea and meditate. As the Tiravanija once said, ‘It is not what you see that is important, but what takes place between people’. This is a work that transcends the boundary between the viewers and the art.

Rirkrit Tiravanija was born in Argentina and grew up in Thailand. He has been recognised as one of the most influential artists of his generation. He combines appropriating traditional objects, public and private performance, teaching and other forms of public service with social engagement, often inviting viewers to inhabit and activate his work. Rirkrit’s works have been shown extensively at international venues, including the MoMA and Guggenheim in New York and the Venice and the Whitney Biennials.
