In the spring of 2022, BY ART MATTERS RESIDENCY 之驻 hosted a group of five talented artists - Jiang Jiaxin, Lin Yi, Shi Bing, Yu Hang, and Yuan Keru - for a short-term residency program with the theme of "The Nearby Scenery". Immersed in the tranquil atmosphere of OōEli 天目里, these artists utilized various mediums to challenge the audience's perception of reality and virtuality, and to explore new aesthetic landscapes ranging from fibre art and new music to images. Through their art, they encouraged people to explore their surroundings and to perceive the present from multiple perspectives. Their work served as a reminder to appreciate the beauty of the neighbourhood and to seek inspiration in our daily lives.

Residents: Jiang Jiaxin, Lin Yi, Shi Bing, Yu Hang, Yuan Keru

Jiang Jiaxin

Jiang Jiaxin's current research focuses on recording and reproducing individual and social phenomena related to cultural and identity issues through digital painting, documentary, and photography. He combines personal experience with a naked, rough, and direct artistic expression to engage in dialogues with people from all over the world in a humorous atmosphere. Through these dialogues, he discovers problems and actively seeks changes for future generations.

Lin Yi

Lin Yi works with various mediums, including painting, photography, multimedia installation, and interactive art. Her creations revolve around the fantasies of daily life and emphasise the repetitive labor that strengthens women's identity and status in everyday life. Her recent works focus on materials and social concerns, exploring the relationship between herself and society through her unique artistic approach. By using materials from everyday life as a carrier, she delves into issues such as elasticity, body, events, and nuances, blurring the boundary between chance and necessity and discussing the contradictory relationship of human beings in space, field, family, and society.

Shi Bing

Shi Bing's art focuses on discussing the imbalance of individuals' lives in reality, exploring the ontological attributes of contemporary human beings, and thinking about how to truly be present in the moment. He finds delicate and sensitive topics in grand historical narratives and social environments, metaphorising the dilemma of existing in a soft, void, and secret way through fibre arts. Shi Bing avoids visualising and spectacle in his artistic expressions and emphasises live experience and on-site discovery. He brings primitive mystique and somaticity into his overall artistic reflection.

Yu Hang

Yu Hang's recent artistic output explores the dynamic relationships between groups, utilising a combination of visual imagery, performances, and installations. With a playful and imaginative approach, he skillfully navigates the complexities of the world around him. His work is marked by a unique blend of humour and poetry, as he engages with and interprets the surrounding reality in a meaningful way.

Yuan Keru

Yuan Keru's practice explores the painterly quality, spatial rhythm, and narrative potentials of moving images. She combines elements from recent events, history, mythology, dreams, and more to experiment with fiction, text structure, costume, set design, and semi-improvised performances. By doing so, she endows her videos with both cinematic and theatrical sensibilities.
