Guided Tours of Public Art

2020.11.01 - 2020.12.31
Location: Oōeli Campus

Duration: 1 hour

“Let’s enter Oōeli as if entering a book”

Art is a way of perceiving the world, and at Oōeli, we would like people to better experience art. In this semi-open plaza based campus, different types of public art works are gradually merging into the environment, communicating with the visitors, and generating ideas through social, cultural, philosophical and sensual topics. We invited the public to join these guided tours to explore and wonder in this forest of art, and read the ‘book’ of Oōeli.

“Experience, Ask Questions, Reflect”

The tours were guided by the volunteers of BY ART MATTERS 之馆. The journey began from the Summer Garden at the underground foyer, went through the Boulder Line at the lawn square, wandered in the mixed scene of antique and fashion at B1OCK, enjoyed the fragrance of tea on the rooftop tea garden, and at last dwelled in the cultural atmosphere at Tsutaya Books. We invited the audiences to immerse themselves in this journey, to not only perceive through their eyes, but use other senses to discover those interesting yet often overlooked things, to reflect on unfamiliar topics, and get rewarded through each question.

“Art can be seen in this way”

During these tours, aside from explaining the backgrounds and ideas behind the artworks, we also dived deeper into one essential aspect of each work. For instance, when presenting the work of Quayola, Jardins d’Été, which pays homage to the late impressionist paintings of Claude Monet through new algorithms, we used wave textured paper to simulate a blurry view, using it as a metaphor of the work to create deeper impressions. While viewing these works, we encouraged the audiences to engage with the works through looking, listening, or smelling, to create their own ways of seeing, and unfold various interpretations of the works.
