It's our pleasure to announce that BY ART MATTERS RESIDENCY 之驻 will cooperate with JNBY Group to launch the residency project "Treasure Hunt". We believe that the process of artistic creation is not only the burst of inspiration but also the continuous exploration, achievement, and blending of individuals, materials, nature, life, environmental, human relationships, social issues, and other perspectives. The residency project hopes to present the achievements and ideas of artists with an organic and sustainable platform, which could transform and explore the possibility of cross-border cooperation for better development.
JNBY Group always believes that the power of art can bring a better life. Originating from clothing but not stopping at clothing. JNBY Group insists on exploring and enriching the beautiful lifestyle in the era and strives to become the generator of artistic lifestyle.
This time, the residency artists will work together with JNBY and CROQUIS (JNBY Group's womenswear and menswear brand) to show the attitude of contemporary young people in Hangzhou in a new visual language, explore the combined expression of traditional handicrafts and modern visual language. By taking the fabric warehouse and employees' daily life as the creative inspiration, the mysterious treasure of the clothing production line could be deeply explored.
We will select four groups of treasure hunters to resident from April 2023 to June 2023.
Residency Content:
-1 Open-Studio Day
-1 Public event led by you
-1 Riot Kitchen no.2 public project with other residency artists
- Creative practice on exploring and using the JNBY Group's massive fabric warehouse
-1 program with JNBY or CROQUIS groups
Residency outputs may appear at:
-Derivatives store of BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆
-An exhibition
-Display in JNBY or CROQUIS shops
-Clothing and product cooperation series with JNBY or CROQUIS brands
In addition, the residency will include:
-Local artists’ studio visiting
-Exchange of local art and cultural resources
-Video documentation during residency
-BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆 and JNBY Group Official media exposure
Residency outputs:
At the end of the project, the applicant will donate at least one work to the BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆 as a collection.
The applicant will regularly communicate and cooperate with the JNBY Group during the residency. The output will have the opportunity to be selected into the product line of JNBY Group or presented as shop display. The details of cooperation will be discussed after confirming the willingness to cooperate.

BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆 is a contemporary art museum located in the OōEli campus, designed and built by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with a world-class museum standard. It opened to the public on December, 2021. The museum will continue to provide exhibition and publication opportunities for artists, to provide a third space for the public outside of everyday living and working and become a leading atelier of creativity.
BY ART MATTERS RESIDENCY 之驻 aims to provide a sharing space for emerging artists and curators to exchange their experience, memories, knowledge and feelings. We encourage our residents to improvise, experiment and interact in and beyond their studios. We hope the coming residents will bring memories around the world to Hangzhou, while also taking their impressions of Hangzhou elsewhere.

With its DNA of art and the brand value of "Re-Consider Humorously", CROQUIS strives to develop an elegant yet quirky clothing collection for men aged 25 to 40 who are looking for pleasure through the whole wearing experience. With an aesthetic design philosophy featuring "Elegance, Playful, Contemporary, Textured" in mind, the brand aims to offer consumers a new perspective on life and enjoyable wearing with high-quality fabrics, unique tailoring craftwork, creative style crushes and high compatibility for multiple occasions.
Residency Space:
BY ART MATTERS RESIDENCY 之驻 has approximately 2000 square meters, with a total of 10 floors. There are 8 residency studios, an exhibition hall, a blackbox, a communal kitchen, a workshop, a laundry room and a pantry.
The exhibition hall, located in the basement, has about 165 square meters and provides a space that can be used for daily activities and exhibitions. The exhibition hall connects to a garden designed by leading Japanese garden designer, Shunmyō Masuno. As an inner courtyard garden, it’s hidden out of sight, with a unique charm.
There is also a workshop in the building, providing basic practical tools and printing facilities. The black box, located on the fourth floor, is a dark room reserved for showing moving images and audio works, while also providing use for other works that require a dark space.
Each studio is about 100 square meters, equipped with a separate bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. There are three types of studio that cater to the needs of a single artist or an artist group of two. Other facilities from the museum BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆 and the OōEli campus – a library, theatre and auditorium – are also available to the residents, in order to support the production and documentation of worldwide contemporary art.
