BY ART MATTERS 天目里美术馆 curated a collaborative project between American artist Theaster Gates and the B1OCK Concept Store at OōEli, inviting Gates to propose ideas for the interior space and display and installing eight pieces of mixed-media art in the store. The antique objects collected by Theaster Gates are placed in a minimalistic fashion concept store, forming a transitional scene among the new and old, while creating a dual experience of shopping and exhibition viewing.

Theaster Gates lives and works in Chicago; he is a professor at the University of Chicago in the Department of Visual Arts and the College. Space has been a main topic in Gates’ practice, drawing on his interest and training in urban planning and preservation, Gates redeems spaces that have been left behind and smartly upturns art values, land values and human values. Gates is the winner of numerous prizes, including the Artes Mundi 6 prize. His works have been shown at major museums and galleries internationally, including the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and dOCUMENTA (13).
